Survey study, 2021
Does thyroid problems link to PMDD?
Most women with PMDD had thyroid dysfunction (63.33%). The more severe someone's PMDD symptoms, the more likely they were to have low thyroid hormone levels.
What they did
A hospital study in Kerala, India collected data from 70 women with PMDD. They completed questionnaires and psychiatric interviews. Researchers measured their thyroid hormone levels (TSH) after 2 months of follow-up.
What they found
63.33% of the 70 women with PMDD had thyroid dysfunction (when the thyroid doesn't produce enough hormone). A clear connection was found between how severe someone's PMDD was and thyroid dysfunction.
What it means for you
A slightly underactive thyroid may be common in women with PMDD. However, this study is small, included only women from one hospital in India, and had no comparison group of women without PMDD. We cannot tell whether the thyroid problem causes PMDD or appears alongside it.
