Survey study, 2025

Does the premenstrual period explain why evening-type sleep patterns cause more sleep schedule mismatch?

No. Evening-type sleep patterns were linked to worse sleep schedule mismatch, but premenstrual symptoms did not explain this connection.

Moderate study design 309 adolescents

What they did

A cross-sectional survey of 309 adolescents measured their natural sleep preference (morning or evening type), the mismatch between their body clock and their actual schedule, and their premenstrual symptoms.

What they found

Adolescents with evening-type sleep preferences had greater mismatch between their natural sleep timing and their actual schedule. Sleep preference type was also linked to premenstrual symptoms. However, premenstrual symptoms did not explain the link between sleep preference and schedule mismatch, and premenstrual symptoms had no direct effect on schedule mismatch.

What it means for you

For adolescents, the problem of evening sleep patterns causing schedule problems is not explained by premenstrual symptoms. The study only included adolescents in one region, so results may not apply to all populations or to adults.
