Does diet and carbohydrate intake affect PMS symptoms?
Yes, girls with poor diet and low carbohydrate intake had more PMS symptoms in this study. But this does not prove diet causes PMS.
What they did
Cross-sectional study of 74 midwifery students with normal weight in Indonesia. Measured dietary pattern by questionnaire, carbohydrate intake using a food frequency form, and PMS symptoms using a standardized form.
What they found
Poor dietary pattern was linked to PMS (p=0.049) with an odds ratio of 3.578. Low carbohydrate intake was linked to PMS (p=0.006) with an odds ratio of 7.622.
What it means for you
Poor diet and low carbohydrate intake appear related to more PMS. However, this cross-sectional study cannot prove diet causes PMS. The study was small and only included girls with normal weight.
