Randomised trial, 2014

Does homeopathic treatment help women with premenstrual syndrome?

The treatment reduced PMS symptoms, especially in women with moderate to severe cases. However, the study had high dropout rates and was only tested in the Netherlands.

Early or limited evidence 77 women with premenstrual syndrome in the Netherlands

What they did

Researchers developed a semi-standardized computer algorithm to select from 11 homeopathic medicines based on each woman's symptoms. They tested it in 77 women with PMS across 20 homeopathic doctors in the Netherlands over 9 months.

What they found

The algorithm proved useful and effective in daily practice. A significant decline in mean PMS symptom scores was detected over time, especially in women with moderate to severe PMS.

What it means for you

The treatment appears helpful for PMS, especially moderate to severe cases. The main limitations are that recruitment was difficult, dropout was high, and the study was only done in the Netherlands, so results may not apply elsewhere.
