Do emotional traits and emotion regulation affect PMS and PMDD?
Yes. Women with negative personality traits and difficulty accepting emotions were more likely to have PMS or PMDD. These emotional factors appear to play a role in these conditions.
What they did
Cross-sectional survey of 223 Indian women aged 18-25. Used screening tools to identify women with PMS or PMDD, then measured their personality traits and emotion regulation ability with rating scales.
What they found
128 women screened positive for PMS and 43 for PMDD. Women with PMS or PMDD had significantly higher negative personality traits. Difficulty with impulsivity and not accepting emotions were linked to having either condition. Negative personality traits predicted both PMS and PMDD. Not accepting emotions specifically predicted PMDD.
What it means for you
Emotional factors may contribute to PMS and PMDD alongside physical causes. Emotional regulation could help treatment. Cannot prove these factors cause PMS (one-time snapshot). Results may only apply to young Indian women aged 18-25.
