Interview study, 2020

Does the menstrual cycle phase affect athletic performance and decision-making?

Yes. Physical performance was better during the menstrual phase than other phases of the cycle. How impulsive athletes were varied by cycle phase, but risk-taking did not. Athletes on birth control pills showed larger performance changes.

Early or limited evidence Eight elite athletes over 7 months, six interviewed (athletes and coaches)

What they did

Eight elite athletes had their physical performance tracked for 7 months across different cycle phases using menstrual mapping and ovulation tests. They completed a decision-making task during two cycle phases. Six people participated in interviews (two elite athletes, two Olympic-level athletes, two coaches) to discuss how menstruation affects performance.

What they found

Physical performance was significantly better during the menstrual phase compared to other cycle phases. How impulsive athletes were (making rash decisions) was significantly affected by menstrual cycle phase. Risk-taking, error rates, and response times were not affected by cycle phase. Athletes who used oral contraceptives showed greater changes in performance across cycle phases.

What it means for you

The menstrual cycle genuinely affects athletic performance and decision-making in specific ways, though effects vary between individuals. This was a small study with only eight athletes, so findings need to be tested in larger groups. Most athletes and coaches have little understanding of how the menstrual cycle works.
