Does nomegestrol acetate improve menstrual disorders and PMS?
Yes, nomegestrol acetate reduced menstrual loss, with results similar to didrogesteron by the end of the study, though the sample was small.
What they did
Fifty-six women aged 22-50 with menstrual disorders or PMS were divided into two groups. One group took nomegestrol acetate 5 mg daily, the other took didrogesteron 10 mg twice daily. Both were given for 10 days starting from day 16 of each cycle, for 3 consecutive cycles.
What they found
After the first cycle, nomegestrol acetate showed higher efficacy in reducing menstrual loss compared to didrogesteron. By the end of the study, results were similar between groups. No pain was reported in either group, and no significant changes in blood tests or clinical parameters occurred.
What it means for you
Nomegestrol acetate may help reduce menstrual bleeding and PMS symptoms at low doses. The main limits are the small sample size and it was only compared to one other drug, so we cannot be sure if it is better than other options.
