Survey study, 2024

Can yoga and diet reduce premenstrual syndrome symptoms?

The study found that female college students who did yoga regularly had lower PMS scores (88) than those who did not (100). However, this is an observation only and does not prove yoga prevents PMS.

Early or limited evidence Female college students in Bhopal, India

What they did

An educational intervention study of female college students in Bhopal. Students filled out a form about PMS and then watched a presentation and video on yoga and healthy diet to reduce PMS symptoms.

What they found

70% of students had PMS. Of those with physical symptoms (48.5%), the most common was abdominal cramps (75%) and least common was nausea and vomiting (18%). Of those with psychological symptoms (38.25%), restlessness was most common (67%) and forgetfulness least common (10%). Girls doing yoga regularly had a lower PMS score (88) compared to girls not doing yoga (100). More than 40% believed yoga could reduce PMS but only 26% practiced yoga regularly.

What it means for you

Girls who practiced yoga had lower PMS scores, but we cannot prove yoga caused this improvement. People who exercise may differ in other ways. The study did not measure what happened after the educational session.
