Survey study, 2018

How much does PMS affect a teenage girl's quality of life?

Girls with PMS had significantly lower quality of life scores across nearly all areas of functioning compared to girls without PMS.

Moderate study design 280 female university students with PMS, average age 20.5 years (72.9% from rural areas)

What they did

Researchers surveyed 280 female university students with PMS (average age 20.5 years). They used questionnaires to classify PMS severity and measure quality of life across physical, mental, social, and daily functioning areas.

What they found

About 12.2% had mild PMS, 66.4% had moderate PMS, and 21.4% had severe PMS. Students with PMS had much lower quality of life scores in nearly all measured areas compared to those without PMS. The difference was smaller only for limitations due to emotional problems.

What it means for you

PMS significantly reduces quality of life in girls' daily activities, physical health, and mental wellbeing. Most girls with PMS have moderate to severe symptoms. Healthcare settings and schools should provide better support and education for girls with PMS.
