Cohort study, 2007

Is vaginal hysterectomy safe when performed as same-day surgery?

Yes, vaginal hysterectomy appears as safe as traditional overnight hospital stay, with 91.5 percent of women discharged within 24 hours and only 6.2 percent needing readmission. However, this research is not about PMS or PMDD.

Early or limited evidence 71 women undergoing vaginal hysterectomy at a teaching hospital, with body mass index less than 40 and suitable home environments

What they did

This was an observational study of 71 women who had vaginal hysterectomy with planned discharge within 24 hours. Researchers recorded operation length, blood loss, surgical complications, hospital readmissions, return to operating theatre, and pain scores at 6 and 24 hours after surgery.

What they found

Seventy-one vaginal hysterectomies were performed. Intraoperative complication rate was 1.4 percent. Sixty-five women (91.5 percent) were discharged home within 24 hours. Readmission rate was 6.2 percent. Operation duration, blood loss, return to theatre rate, and febrile illness rates were comparable with inpatient studies.

What it means for you

Same-day discharge after vaginal hysterectomy appears feasible and safe. However, this is a small observational study from one hospital and one surgeon, so results may not apply everywhere. Women had body mass index below 40 and suitable home environments, so results may not apply to all women. This study is not directly relevant to PMS or PMDD support.
