Lab study, 2021
Does Jacobson's relaxation technique help reduce premenstrual syndrome?
Yes, girls who practiced the relaxation technique had clearly lower PMS severity compared to girls in the control group. The technique had no side effects.
What they did
60 late adolescent girls in Kollam in 2020 participated. 30 were taught Jacobson's relaxation technique and 30 were in a control group. All girls filled out questionnaires about PMS at the start and after the intervention.
What they found
Girls who did the relaxation technique had clearly lower PMS scores on the questionnaire after the intervention compared to the control group.
What it means for you
This study shows the technique might help reduce PMS with no side effects and could be used alongside other treatments. The main limitation is that it was a small study in one location with no follow-up to see if benefits lasted over time.
