Case report, 1995

Does stopping the menstrual cycle help skin conditions that get worse before periods?

Yes. In this one woman, both a hormone medicine and surgery to remove her ovaries showed dramatic improvement in her skin condition.

Early or limited evidence One woman with benign familial pemphigus that worsens before periods

What they did

Case report of a woman with benign familial pemphigus (a genetic skin condition) that got worse before her period. She was first treated with goserelin, a hormone medicine injected under the skin. Later she had surgery to remove her uterus and ovaries, and was given oestrogen replacement therapy.

What they found

Her skin condition showed dramatic improvement with the goserelin treatment. The improvement continued and was sustained after the surgery with oestrogen replacement.

What it means for you

Stopping hormonal changes of the menstrual cycle can improve this skin condition. This is one person's experience, so we do not know if it works for other people.
