Does buserelin nasal spray help premenstrual syndrome?

Buserelin temporarily reduced peak symptom severity and improved some symptoms like depression and breast pain, but underlying symptoms worsened and benefits did not last after treatment stopped.

Early or limited evidence 16 women with premenstrual syndrome (10 completed)

What they did

Open trial with 16 women. Ten completed the treatment. All received buserelin nasal spray 900 micrograms daily to stop ovulation. Daily symptoms were measured throughout using a visual scale.

What they found

Peak symptom severity and maximum global scores decreased on buserelin. Minimum global scores increased, meaning underlying symptoms worsened. Depression, bloating, and breast symptoms showed significant improvement (p less than 0.05). These symptoms significantly worsened again in follow-up months after treatment stopped.

What it means for you

Buserelin may temporarily mask surface symptoms but does not resolve underlying problems. Side effects may limit long-term use. Main limitation is the very small sample, no control group, and only 10 of 16 women completing treatment.
