Survey study, 2024

Do daughters' premenstrual symptoms match their mothers' previous premenstrual symptoms?

Some symptoms like anxiety and bloating were similar between mothers and daughters. Daughters' anxiety and fatigue were linked to their mothers' psychological menopausal symptoms.

Early or limited evidence 55 mother-daughter couples, with daughters aged 25.54±6.4 years and mothers aged 55.23±8.31 years

What they did

The study compared premenstrual symptoms in 55 postmenopausal mothers and their adult daughters using standard medical questionnaires.

What they found

Anxiety, depressive thoughts, sleep, and bloating symptoms were similar in mothers and daughters. Depressive mood, fatigue, appetite, and pain were different between the groups. Daughters' anxiety and fatigue were linked to their mothers' psychological menopausal symptoms. Daughters' pain scores were linked to their mothers' menopausal symptoms in the urinary and genital area.

What it means for you

Premenstrual symptoms in daughters may be influenced by their mothers' health issues. This could help in managing menstrual periods through family support. The main limit is the small number of people studied, which means the findings may not apply to all families.
