Survey study, 2021

Does taping therapy reduce period pain and PMS symptoms?

Taping helped reduce period pain severity, but it did not clearly reduce other PMS symptoms or menstrual distress. The study was small with only 25 women in each group.

Early or limited evidence 50 university students with moderate to severe period pain and mild to moderate PMS

What they did

Researchers divided 50 university students with moderate to severe period pain and mild to moderate PMS into two groups. One group of 25 used tape on their skin. The other group of 25 received a free training class but no tape. Researchers measured pain and PMS symptoms using questionnaires before and after.

What they found

Taping reduced the severity of period pain. However, there was no clear difference between the two groups in overall PMS symptoms or menstrual distress, except for period pain severity itself.

What it means for you

Taping may help with period pain but may not help other PMS symptoms. The main limits are the small number of participants and that the control group received an educational class, which may have affected results.
