Survey study, 2014

Does education about complementary and alternative medicine help young women learn to manage PMS?

Yes, significantly. After the educational session, female nursing students showed major improvements in knowledge about PMS and various complementary approaches including diet, herbs, and mind-body techniques.

Early or limited evidence 201 young adult female nursing students in pre-professional and professional years, mean age 21.98±1.23 years

What they did

201 young adult female nursing students received a structured educational session about complementary and alternative medicine (diet, supplements, herbal remedies, mind-body interventions, manipulative methods) for PMS management. They were tested on their knowledge before and after the session.

What they found

The average age was 21.98±1.23 years. About two-thirds (66.3%) reported they had learned about PMS from family and friends before the session. After the session, knowledge significantly improved about PMS definition, timing, and symptoms (p=0.000 for each) and all complementary approaches (p=0.000 for each). Total knowledge score increased significantly (p=0.000).

What it means for you

Educational sessions can increase knowledge about PMS management. However, this study only included nursing students already interested in health, so findings may not apply to other women. The study measured knowledge gain but not whether it led to symptom relief or better health.
