Case report, 2001
Does taking nefazodone just during the luteal phase help PMDD?
Yes. All three women who took nefazodone reported marked improvement in symptoms. All three had complete relief of emotional symptoms, and two also had complete relief of body symptoms. This is a very small study.
What they did
Three women with PMDD took nefazodone at 50 mg twice a day for 2 weeks during the luteal phase of their menstrual cycle only.
What they found
All three reported marked improvement in symptoms. All three had full remission of emotional symptoms. Two also had full remission of body symptoms. Side effects were mild.
What it means for you
Taking PMDD medication only during the luteal phase might work well and cause fewer side effects than taking it every day. It might also help women stick with treatment better. The main limit is that only three women were studied.
