Survey study, 2024

Does learning mindfulness meditation help women with PMS feel happier?

Yes, women with PMS who learned mindfulness meditation felt significantly happier immediately after the program and one month later (P=0.0001). This suggests mindfulness could be a helpful tool.

Moderate study design 112 women with PMS from health centers in Isfahan, Iran (56 in each group)

What they did

A randomized trial with 112 women with PMS divided into two groups of 56 each. The intervention group received eight 60-minute sessions of mindfulness and yoga via Google Meet. The control group received nothing. Happiness was measured before, immediately after, and one month later.

What they found

There was a significant increase in happiness scores in the intervention group immediately after the program and at one month follow-up (P=0.0001). The study does not report specific happiness scores or results for the control group.

What it means for you

Mindfulness and yoga appear to help women with PMS feel happier. This is a fairly well-designed study, but it involved only one location and a short follow-up period. We do not know if the happiness increase lasts longer than a month or if the benefits are the same for all women.
