What factors are linked to the water-retention form of PMS?

Emotional stress, tissue swelling symptoms, and three hormone levels (progesterone, prolactin, and cortisol) were linked together in women with the water-retention form of PMS. However, this was a small study with no control group, so these results may not apply reliably to other women.
