Does a combination of isoxsuprine, acetaminophen and caffeine help period pain and premenstrual tension?
The drug combination was effective in 95 percent of women with premenstrual tension and 92.5 percent with period pain. This is an older study that doesn't clearly show placebo comparison.
What they did
80 women were divided into 2 groups: 40 with premenstrual tension and 40 with primary period pain. They received a randomized, double-blind combination of isoxsuprine 10 mg, acetaminophen 250 mg and caffeine 30 mg.
What they found
95 percent of women with premenstrual tension and 92.5 percent with period pain had excellent or very good response. Overall effectiveness was 93.75 percent.
What it means for you
This combination appears effective for both premenstrual tension and period pain. Main limitations: published in 1975, so it is older, and the abstract doesn't clearly show how results compared to placebo.
