Survey study, 2023

What do adolescent girls know about premenstrual syndrome?

Most adolescent girls had average or good knowledge about PMS. 56.5% had average knowledge and 37.1% had good knowledge. Researchers also created and validated an information booklet to help teach girls about PMS.

Early or limited evidence 171 adolescent girls from schools in Navi Mumbai, India

What they did

Cross-sectional study of 171 adolescent girls from schools in Navi Mumbai. Researchers measured their knowledge about PMS using a structured questionnaire. They developed an information booklet and checked its quality using a validity scale.

What they found

Before education, 56.5% of girls had average knowledge and 37.1% had good knowledge about PMS. Girls knew more about basic menstruation but less about what PMS actually is. Knowledge varied by the age when PMS started and by family income. The information booklet scored 0.94 on a validity scale, indicating it was well-designed.

What it means for you

Most adolescent girls have some knowledge about PMS, but gaps exist in understanding what PMS specifically is and what it means. A well-designed information booklet could help fill these gaps. The main limitation is that this study only looked at girls in one city in India and did not test whether the booklet actually improved their knowledge.
