Survey study, 2026
What lifestyle and work factors are linked to PMDD symptoms in Chinese nurses?
42.4% of Chinese nurses have PMDD symptoms. Risk is higher in those who work night shifts, do not exercise, drink alcohol, are overweight in a certain range, or have depression, anxiety, or poor sleep.
What they did
Survey of 1,031 female nurses in China. Measured their PMDD symptoms, depression, anxiety, sleep quality, work stress, body weight, exercise habits, and shift work patterns.
What they found
42.4% of the nurses had PMDD symptoms. Those at higher risk had a body mass index between 24 and 27.9 kg/m2, did not exercise regularly, drank alcohol, worked frequent night shifts, had depression or anxiety, poor sleep quality, and high work stress. Depression, anxiety, poor sleep, and work stress showed the strongest connections to PMDD.
What it means for you
For nurses, changing lifestyle factors like exercising more and reducing alcohol might help reduce PMDD. Hospitals could improve shift schedules to reduce night work, offer wellness programs, and help manage work stress. However, this was a single survey so we cannot prove these factors cause PMDD, and the findings may only apply to nurses in China.
