Survey study, 2024

Does asthma get worse around your period in teenagers?

Yes, 75.5% of teenage girls with asthma reported their symptoms worsened around their period. This was a small study with no comparison group, so we cannot be completely certain.

Early or limited evidence 50 teenagers aged 12-18 with asthma

What they did

Researchers studied 50 teenagers with asthma (mean age 16.08±2.35 years). Participants completed tests to measure asthma control and premenstrual symptoms.

What they found

75.5% reported perimenstrual asthma. 38.7% experienced moderate or severe premenstrual syndrome symptoms, and 8.1% had premenstrual dysphoric disorder. Teenagers with perimenstrual asthma had more impairment with daily and home activities, more frequent asthma symptoms, and used more medication.

What it means for you

Asthma getting worse around your period may be common in teenagers with severe asthma. However, this was a very small study with no control group. We need more research to understand the link.
