Survey study, 2024

Do women with PMDD have more depression and anxiety than those without PMDD?

Yes. Women with PMDD had significantly higher depression and anxiety symptoms and lower well-being compared to women without PMDD.

Early or limited evidence 112 Hungarian women with regular menstrual periods not on hormonal contraceptives, 68 with probable PMDD

What they did

Cross-sectional study of 112 Hungarian women with regular menstrual periods not on hormonal contraceptives. Researchers screened for PMDD using DSM-5 criteria and measured depression using the Beck Depression Inventory, anxiety using the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, and well-being using the WHO Well-Being Scale.

What they found

68 women had probable PMDD and 45 did not. The PMDD group had significantly higher depression scores (F=19.394, p≤0.001), higher anxiety scores (F=17.714, p≤0.001), and lower well-being (p=0.04). Anxiety and depressive symptoms predicted the likelihood of PMDD.

What it means for you

Women with PMDD experience significantly more depression, anxiety, and lower well-being. This is a small study from one country with a cross-sectional design (snapshot in time), so it shows associations but not proof of cause.
