Randomised trial, 2005

Can the antidepressant fluoxetine help teenage girls with PMDD?

In these 3 case reports, fluoxetine fully resolved PMDD symptoms in teenage girls treated for 2 years, but with no control group this cannot prove the drug caused the improvement.

Early or limited evidence 3 adolescent girls with PMDD.

What they did

Doctors described 3 adolescent girls with PMDD who were treated with fluoxetine for 2 years, and reviewed existing clinical trials of fluoxetine for PMDD in adult women.

What they found

All 3 teenagers had complete resolution of their PMDD symptoms after 2 years of fluoxetine treatment. The authors note this adds to evidence from adult trials supporting fluoxetine's effectiveness.

What it means for you

This may support using fluoxetine for severe, disabling PMDD in teenagers, but it is based on only 3 cases with no placebo comparison. The authors themselves call for a proper randomized placebo-controlled trial in adolescents.
