Survey study, 2025

How many Indian schoolgirls have PMDD or PMS, and are age, height or weight linked to it?

About 14.5% of the schoolgirls studied had PMDD and 54.5% had PMS symptoms. Age, height, weight, and school class were linked to premenstrual symptoms, with older age especially tied to more symptoms.

Early or limited evidence Teenage schoolgirls aged 12 to 18 in the Dadri region, Greater Noida, India

What they did

Cross-sectional questionnaire study of teenage girls aged 12 to 18 from schools in the Dadri region of Greater Noida, India, selected by cluster sampling. Symptoms were assessed against standard diagnostic criteria for PMS and PMDD, and researchers looked for links with demographic and body measurements.

What they found

14.5% of schoolgirls met criteria for PMDD, and 54.5% reported PMS symptoms. Age, height, weight, and class showed significant associations with premenstrual disorders. There was a strong positive correlation between age and symptoms such as hypersomnia, physical symptoms, and effects on social life activities.

What it means for you

PMDD and PMS appear fairly common among these teenage girls, and symptoms seem to increase with age, which could help target support programs by age group. This was a one-time survey in one region of India, so it cannot show what causes these patterns, and results may not apply to other populations.
