What does Asian research show about premenstrual dysphoric disorder?
Most research from Asia on PMDD has been prevalence studies documenting how common it is. Asian research on the genetic and biological basis of PMDD remains very limited.
What they did
A workgroup of DSM-5 experts reviewed evidence about premenstrual dysphoric disorder, including research contributions from Asia.
What they found
PMDD was included as a separate diagnostic category in DSM-5. Research contributions from Asia have mainly been prevalence studies. Genetic and neurobiological domains of PMDD remain largely untouched in Asia.
What it means for you
PMDD is now officially recognized as a diagnosis. However, more research is needed from Asia to understand the underlying biology and genetics of the disorder.
