Do oral contraceptives help psychotic symptoms that start before menstruation?
In one adolescent with psychosis starting just before her period, symptoms improved after her period ended and after she started taking oral contraceptives and olanzapine. We can't know from this single case whether the contraceptives, the medication, or the natural end of menstruation helped most.
What they did
A case report of one adolescent who developed a new episode of psychosis shortly before her period started. She was treated with combined oral contraceptives and olanzapine, an antipsychotic medication.
What they found
Her psychotic symptoms got better after her period ended and after she started the contraceptives and medication together.
What it means for you
A very small number of adolescents may develop psychosis linked to their menstrual cycle, possibly related to estrogen changes. We don't know from this one case whether the contraceptives, the medication, or the natural end of the period helped the most. This is one adolescent, so we can't say how common this is or how well it works for others.
