Survey study, 2023
How many adolescent girls have PMS and does it affect their school grades?
About 4 in 10 adolescent girls in secondary school had mild to moderate PMS. Girls with PMS were more likely to have poor grades, but the study cannot prove PMS causes the poor performance.
What they did
Researchers randomly selected 478 adolescent girls from 8 schools in Belagavi city, India. They collected information about PMS symptoms, family background, and grades.
What they found
Among 478 girls, 207 had mild PMS symptoms (43%) and 191 had moderate symptoms (40%). Girls aged 14 to 15 were more likely to have PMS, especially if their mother had no schooling. Girls with PMS were more likely to have poor academic performance.
What it means for you
PMS is very common in teenage girls and is linked to worse grades. Since the study collected information at just one point in time, we cannot say whether PMS causes the poor grades or if other factors are involved.
