Survey study, 2014

How many Jordanian women have PMS or PMDD, what symptoms are worst, and how do they manage them?

About 80% have PMS and 10% have PMDD. The worst symptoms are belly cramps, lower back pain, and chest pain. Women most often use pain medicine, hot drinks, warm clothes, or lie down.

Moderate study design 254 women studying or working at a large Jordanian university

What they did

Researchers surveyed 254 women at a large Jordanian university using questionnaires to measure PMS severity and PMDD diagnosis. They asked about symptoms and ways women manage them.

What they found

PMS prevalence was 80.2% and PMDD was 10.2%. The most severe symptoms were abdominal cramp, lower back pain, and breast pain. Higher stress, younger age, higher weight, not being married, poorer health, and missing work were linked to worse symptoms. Women most often used pain medicine, hot fluids, warm clothes, or lying on the abdomen to manage symptoms.

What it means for you

Most women experience PMS. Knowing the worst symptoms and what women try to use helps healthcare providers improve care. The study was done in one country with university students, so results may not apply to all women.
