Survey study, 2017
Is depression more common in women with severe PMS?
Yes. Among women with severe PMS, 51% had depression symptoms, compared to 13.5% of women without severe PMS.
What they did
Survey of 121 Turkish women who completed questionnaires about depression and PMS symptoms.
What they found
Depression was much more common in women with severe PMS (51%) than in those without severe PMS (13.5%). Depression was linked to most PMS symptoms including depressive feelings, anxiety, fatigue, irritability, and appetite changes, but not to sleep changes.
What it means for you
Women with PMS should be screened for depression. However, this was a single survey in Turkey of married women, so the findings may not apply to all women with PMS.
