Survey study, 2005
How common are PMS and PMDD in female students, and what mental health problems go with them?
PMS affected 15.3% and PMDD affected 4% of female hostel students. Psychiatric illness was present in 58.62% of these women.
What they did
Cross-sectional survey of female students living in a hostel. Researchers assessed prevalence of PMS and PMDD and identified psychiatric and lifestyle correlates.
What they found
PMS prevalence was 15.3%, PMDD prevalence was 4%. Psychiatric illness was present in 58.62% of women with PMS or PMDD. These women had high rates of anxiety disorder, mood disorder, eating disorders, and alcohol abuse. They reported lower life satisfaction and irregular meal and sleep habits. Women in their late twenties to mid-thirties were most vulnerable.
What it means for you
Most women with PMS or PMDD also have anxiety or mood problems. This was a small study in one hostel setting, so findings may not represent all women or the general population.
