Case-control study, 2015
Is apelin related to PMS?
Apelin levels were significantly higher in women with PMS. Researchers suggest apelin might help diagnose PMS, though this is a small study.
What they did
Researchers compared 40 women with PMS and 40 healthy women by measuring blood levels of oxidative stress markers, visfatin, and apelin.
What they found
Oxidative stress was higher in the PMS group but not statistically significant (p > 0.05). Visfatin levels showed no difference between groups (p = 0.893). Apelin was significantly higher in the PMS group (p < 0.001).
What it means for you
Apelin might be useful as a laboratory test for diagnosing PMS. However, this is a small study, so the results need confirmation in larger groups before it could be used in clinical practice.
