Is PMDD related to other mood disorders like depression?

PMDD shares many symptoms with depression and other mood disorders and is classified with them in diagnostic manuals. However, important differences suggest PMDD is distinct, though its exact relationship remains unclear.

Early or limited evidence Literature review (no specific study population)

What they did

Examined published research on PMDD's epidemiology, symptoms, family history, biology, and treatment to compare with features of other mood disorders.

What they found

Women with PMDD and patients with other mood disorders experience overlapping symptoms. Past mood disorder episodes and family history are common in PMDD. Some biological markers and antidepressants work for both conditions. However, certain biological features, cognitive patterns, and treatment responses differentiate PMDD from other mood disorders.

What it means for you

PMDD shares features with depression and other mood disorders but is also distinct from them. The classification of PMDD with mood disorders in diagnostic manuals has some support but does not mean PMDD is simply depression. More research is needed to clarify the relationships.
