Can a talk-therapy approach that treats several problems at once improve sleep and PMS symptoms?

A small Iranian trial found that women who had 8 sessions of this combined therapy slept better and had fewer PMS symptoms than women who did not, with the improvement still present at follow-up.

Early or limited evidence 40 women of reproductive age with PMS at a university medical center in Iran

What they did

40 women of reproductive age with PMS, referred to a university medical center in Iran, were divided into an experimental group (20 women, 8 therapy sessions) and a control group (20 women). Sleep quality and PMS symptoms were measured before treatment, after treatment, and at follow-up using standard questionnaires.

What they found

There was a significant difference between the treatment and control groups in both sleep quality and PMS symptoms, and this difference held up at both the post-test and follow-up measurements.

What it means for you

This suggests this type of combined psychological treatment could help improve sleep and ease PMS, but the study was small, participants were not randomly assigned, and it was done at one center in Iran, so the findings need confirming in larger, more rigorous trials.
