Survey study, 2025

Do women with ringing in the ears have more menstrual problems?

Yes. Women with ringing in their ears are more likely to have severe menstrual pain from a known cause and heavy periods, even after accounting for other factors like age and stress.

Moderate study design 558 premenopausal women.

What they did

Asked 558 premenopausal women about ringing in their ears and their menstrual patterns over time. They compared women with and without ringing to see if menstrual problems were more common in each group.

What they found

33% of women reported ringing in their ears. 74.4% had menstrual pain. The most common menstrual problem was heavy periods (20%), followed by very light periods (11.11%). Women with ringing were more likely to have severe menstrual pain from an identified cause and heavy periods compared with women without ringing. These connections stayed clear even when accounting for age, income, and other factors.

What it means for you

If you have ringing in your ears and menstrual problems, these might be connected through shared body mechanisms, though the exact link is not yet understood. Both conditions can seriously affect your quality of life. The main limit is that this was a snapshot study, so we do not know if one causes the other.
