What treatments work for premenstrual disorders?
Several treatments work. Three SSRIs are FDA-approved for PMDD. Exercise, diet changes, and therapy also help some women, but no single treatment works for everyone.
What they did
Review of treatment approaches for premenstrual disorders, including non-drug options and various medications.
What they found
Non-drug treatments that help include aerobic exercise, dietary changes and supplements, and cognitive-behavioral therapy. Three SSRIs have FDA approval for PMDD. Spironolactone and birth control pills are used off-label. A birth control pill containing drospirenone is effective for reducing premenstrual symptoms. A newer drospirenone pill given for 24 days out of a 28-day cycle is effective for PMDD.
What it means for you
If you have premenstrual symptoms, many treatment options exist. SSRIs are proven to work for PMDD. Exercise and diet changes help too. If you're considering birth control pills, drospirenone-containing pills have good evidence. This is a review of research from 2006 and earlier.
