Survey study, 2026

Is emotional dysregulation linked to premenstrual symptoms?

Yes, emotional dysregulation is significantly linked to premenstrual symptoms. Women with poor emotional regulation are more likely to experience severe premenstrual symptoms.

Moderate study design 124 women aged 18-35 years

What they did

Researchers surveyed 124 women aged 18 to 35 years. They measured premenstrual symptoms using a symptom assessment form and emotional dysregulation using the DERS-18 (Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale). They analyzed the relationship between the two using correlation analysis.

What they found

The majority of participants experienced severe premenstrual symptoms. More than 80% had poor emotional regulation. The correlation between premenstrual symptoms and emotional dysregulation was 0.446 with p=0.001, showing a statistically significant positive relationship.

What it means for you

Women with poor emotional control are more likely to have worse premenstrual symptoms. Working on emotional regulation might help manage symptoms. However, the study was small and only looked at women aged 18-35, so findings may differ in other age groups. Correlation shows these are linked but does not prove that poor emotional regulation causes worse symptoms.
