Randomised trial, 2022

Does a B6 supplement with herbs help sleep and anxiety in PMS and menopause?

Yes, the supplement improved sleep problems by 46.6% and anxiety by 23.2% in women with PMS and those in menopause transition.

Early or limited evidence 32 women aged 18-70 (18 with PMS, 14 with menopause transition) with sleep disturbances and anxiety

What they did

Exploratory prospective study with 32 women (18 with PMS, 14 with menopause transition) aged 18-70 with sleep disturbances and anxiety. They took one tablet containing vitamin B6 and four plant extracts twice daily for 15-20 days. Sleep was measured with the Insomnia Severity Index and anxiety with the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale.

What they found

In all participants, sleep scores improved by 46.6% (from 20.39 to 10.87) and anxiety scores improved by 23.2% (from 16.23 to 12.45) from baseline to end of treatment. Improvements were seen in both women with PMS and those in menopause transition.

What it means for you

The supplement showed promise for helping sleep and anxiety. However, this small study had no control group, so improvements might be natural recovery or placebo effect. Larger controlled studies are needed to confirm effectiveness.
