What complementary and alternative therapies do nursing students in Egypt use for PMS?

87% of nursing students used complementary or alternative therapies for PMS, with herbal therapy being most common. The study shows what people use but not whether these treatments are effective.

Early or limited evidence 1120 nursing students in Egypt (Dakahlia governorate)

What they did

Cross-sectional descriptive study of 1120 nursing students in Egypt. Participants completed a questionnaire in Arabic from March to May 2014 about their use of complementary and alternative therapies for PMS.

What they found

87% of students used complementary and alternative therapies to minimize PMS symptoms. Herbal therapy was the most commonly used approach, followed by hydrotherapy, changing food types, massage, and exercise.

What it means for you

Most nursing students in this region of Egypt used herbal and other complementary approaches for PMS. The main limitations are that the study only describes what people are using, not whether these approaches work, and the findings are specific to one region.
