Systematic review, 2023

What nonpharmacological methods help premenstrual syndrome symptoms?

Aromatherapy, educational programs, health belief models, and acupressure were found effective. However, confidence is low because only four studies met the inclusion criteria.

Early or limited evidence Women with premenstrual syndrome in Turkey

What they did

Systematic review of randomized controlled nursing theses. Searched Turkish thesis databases from October to November 2022 using keywords PMS and premenstrual syndrome. Found 130 total studies; only 4 were randomized controlled trials meeting inclusion criteria.

What they found

The four studies used various symptom measurement scales and found that aromatherapy, health-related education models, health belief models, and acupressure significantly reduced PMS symptoms.

What it means for you

These four nonpharmacological methods may help PMS. However, the evidence is very limited because only four small studies met criteria, and they came from postgraduate theses rather than published peer-reviewed journals. More research is needed.
