Survey study, 1976

Is premenstrual mood problems linked to depression disorder?

Yes. Women with a history of depressive disorder were significantly more likely to have premenstrual mood symptoms. Women with other psychiatric disorders were not.

Early or limited evidence 81 women presenting to a neurology clinic with functional headache

What they did

Cross-sectional study of 81 women presenting to a neurology clinic with functional headaches. Researchers examined the relationship between a history of depressive disorder and premenstrual mood symptoms.

What they found

Premenstrual mood symptoms were significantly associated with a history of depressive disorder. Women with non-affective psychiatric disorders showed no greater frequency of premenstrual mood symptoms than psychiatrically normal women.

What it means for you

If you have premenstrual mood symptoms, you might also have a depressive disorder. Limitation: all women in the study had headaches and were seen in a clinic, so results may not apply to all women.
