Can women with premenstrual mood changes develop serious mood disorders?
In some women with premenstrual mood changes, a serious mood disorder called manic-depressive illness may develop, but mainly in those with genetic predisposition. Doctors should watch for severe mood problems after pregnancy in women with this pattern.
What they did
Described 3 women who had mood swings tied to their menstrual cycle and then developed manic-depressive illness that required intensive psychiatric treatment or hospital admission.
What they found
All 3 women had a pattern of mood changes during their menstrual cycle, followed by development of manic-depressive illness.
What it means for you
Women with premenstrual mood swings might be at risk of developing manic-depressive illness if they have the genetic background for it. The main limitation is that this comes from just 3 cases, so we don't know how common this pattern is.
