Yes. Female students who took drospirenone-containing contraceptive for 6 months showed statistically significant reductions in PMS symptoms, especially in irritability, aggressiveness, and sleep.

Early or limited evidence 565 female students from higher education institutions in Khabarovsk

What they did

Cross-sectional study with an online survey of 565 female students from higher education institutions in Khabarovsk between October and December 2021. Diagnosis was verified using diary entries over 2 to 3 menstrual cycles with severity assessed on a three-point scale.

What they found

At baseline, PMS severity was: mild 70.81%, moderate 23.08%, severe 6.11%. After 6 months of drospirenone-containing contraceptive, there was a statistically significant reduction in PMS symptoms (p<0.001), with improvements in sleep and reduced irritability and aggressiveness.

What it means for you

This specific type of hormonal birth control may significantly improve PMS symptoms, particularly mood-related symptoms. This was an observational study without a control group, so we cannot be certain the contraceptive caused the improvement.
