How do brain receptors change in different types of PMDD?
Rats with two different types of PMDD showed different changes in brain receptors and brain chemicals, suggesting PMDD might have different forms.
What they did
Researchers created two types of PMDD rat models based on traditional Chinese medicine categories. They measured different brain receptors and brain chemicals (GABA and glutamate) in the hippocampus.
What they found
The two types of rats showed different patterns of receptor changes. In one type, GABA (a calming chemical) decreased while glutamate (an activating chemical) increased.
What it means for you
Different types of PMDD might have different causes in the brain. If this is true in people, it might mean different treatments work for different women. The main limit is this was animal research, not human studies.
