Survey study, 2014

How much do teenage nursing students know about PMS?

Most of the teenage students studied did not know enough about premenstrual syndrome, with insufficient knowledge being the most common result.

Early or limited evidence 282 teenage girls with PMS at nursing secondary schools in Al-Diwaniya Governorate, Iraq

What they did

Researchers surveyed 282 teenage girls with PMS who were studying at nursing secondary schools in Al-Diwaniya, Iraq, between February and July 2013. The girls filled out a questionnaire about their periods and their knowledge of PMS, which was checked for reliability and reviewed by 13 experts.

What they found

44.6% of the students had insufficient knowledge about PMS. How much a student knew did not depend on her personal background or her period characteristics, meaning the same questionnaire and gaps applied across the whole group.

What it means for you

Teenage girls, even those training to be nurses, often lack basic knowledge about PMS, pointing to a need for better school health education on the topic. This was a one-time survey in one region of Iraq with no comparison group, so it only describes this group at this time and cannot show cause and effect.
